Cell-based therapy is a promising approach for tissue repair and regeneration in many disorders. Adult stem cells can be isolated from several tissues, such as bone marrow, skin, heart, gut, and skeletal muscle, among others. In the past, adipose tissue has raised substantial interest as an alternative source of stem cells due to its high recovery and accessibility. For the first time, Zuk et al described human adipose tissue as a source of multipotent mesenchymal stromal/stem cells similar to those present in bone marrow.
